Changing What It Means to Be Blind - Taking Our Place in the World
The provisionally slogan of the congress takes up some important goals of the work of organisations for blind people: the awareness for the problems of visually impaired people, the securing of their equality and a good quality of life respecting the diversity of human mankind. Within the framework of the congress the general assembly, the reports from different countries, the election of the WBU-boards, some thematic workshops and a social program will take place. Important themes are the equality of blind and visual impaired people in the society and in law, their integration in employment in order to keep up their independence, their empowerment and the representation of their interests. Special themes are the global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness (Vision 2020) and the problem of blindness in children.
In partnership with the Swiss National Association of and for the Blind (SNAB), the Union Suisse des Aveugles USA (Swiss Union of the Blind), the Association pour le Bien des Aveugles et Malvoyants ABA (Association for the Wellbeing of the Blind and Visually Impaired) and Retina Suisse, the Swiss Federation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (SFB) has put together an interesting
program, comprising, in addition to the General Assembly of the WBU itself, a
Women's Forum, an
Exhibition on assistive technology and a
Market Place.
